Alumni WeekendAlumni Weekend Is a Chance to Reconnect
Calling the classes of 1942-1967 (those years ending in two and seven) – Reconnect with fellow classmates and explore today’s university. The fun begins on Friday, June 1, with campus tours, an all-alumni wine tasting and the Excellence Awards Gala. (See sidebar for list of award recipients.) Saturday, June 2, enjoy an all-alumni luncheon, sorority coffee hours, programs and class get-togethers. For more information, visit our Web site or call the Alumni Association at 1-800-836-ALUM.

Alumni Association Annual Meeting Scheduled
The UAlbany Alumni Association invites its members to attend the annual All-Alumni Luncheon and Annual Meeting, June 2, 2007, at noon on the Downtown Campus. Come learn what the association has accomplished in the past year and plans for the future. For more information, contact the Alumni Association at 1-800-836-ALUM.

LacrosseEvents Planned for Lacrosse Fans
The Varsity Club is sponsoring two events this month that lacrosse fans won’t want to miss. Jump on the Stomp Syracuse bus as the UAlbany men’s lacrosse team takes on the Syracuse Orangemen April 20. Meet at the Alumni House for some pizza and beverages before heading to the Carrier Dome. The cost includes your game ticket, roundtrip bus transportation and food prior to the trip. UAlbany Varsity Club members $20; nonmembers $30. Register online. The following week, on April 24, come cheer on the Great Danes as they face the Dartmouth “Big Green” at 3:30 p.m. on UAlbany’s John Fallon Field. After the game, join the Varsity Club at Across the Street Pub for some munchies and a chance to talk lacrosse with other UAlbany fans. UAlbany Happy Hour Planned in Richmond, Va.

MBA Class of 1982 25th Reunion Planned
The UAlbany Alumni Association invites you to reconnect with alumni from the MBA Class of 1982 on June 30, 2007. The evening starts at the Alumni House with a cocktail reception followed by a campus tour and dinner. A Sunday family barbeque also is being planned. The 1982 masters in accounting alumni also are invited to attend, since they shared many of the same classes. Squonk OperaSquonk Opera to Perform “Albany: The Opera”
Pittsburgh's genre-twisting ensemble, Squonk Opera, presents live performances that shatter the boundaries between music and theatrics – weaving dance, humor, giant puppetry and innovative props with music. Each project takes the name of a host city and creates a multimedia spectacle specific to each site. Squonk Opera in Albany, sponsored by the UAlbany Alumni Association, incorporates an original score, content specific to our community and local groups who will perform with the ensemble April 21. Discount Tickets Available to “William Kennedy’s Roscoe”
Your Alumni Association has obtained a discount ticket price of only $22 for the Albany Symphony Orchestra’s April 20 performance of “William Kennedy’s Roscoe” at the Palace Theatre in Albany at 7:30 p.m. The concert features Pulitzer Prize-winning author William Kennedy, whose novel served as the inspiration for this world premiere composition, as narrator and features violinist Colin Jacobsen of Yo-Yo Ma’s Silk Road Project fame. Relay for LifeUAlbany Raises More Than $90,000 for Cancer Research
More than 1,200 UAlbany students walked all night March 24-25 to raise money for cancer research as part of the American Cancer Society’s signature activity, the Relay For Life. This year's event, held in the SEFCU Arena, raised more than $90,112, and additional funds are still coming in. UAlbany's student-run television station, Albany Student Television, has created a video highlighting the event.

UAlbany Launches Forensic Accounting Program
The Department of Accounting and Law, part of the School of Business, is developing a groundbreaking interdisciplinary graduate program in forensic accounting. The Congressional response to recent multibillion dollar corporate scandals, most notably through the Sarbanes-Oxley act, has helped place much of the reliance for future corporate integrity on the shoulders of the forensic accountant. Focus and organization are not always habits that bright young freshmen bring with them to college. These qualities, however, undoubtedly aided the 50 freshmen this fall who achieved perfect 4.0 grade point averages. The students were honored at a reception in University Hall March 7. Grant to Aid In Developing Strategies for Older Struggling Readers
Lynn Gelzheiser, associate professor in the Department of Educational and Counseling Psychology, has received a $1.5 million grant from the U.S. Department of Education’s Institute for Education Sciences. Gelzheiser’s study focuses on the needs of older students who experience severe reading difficulties despite remedial and classroom instruction. Full story >>

Delta Sigma PiDelta Sigma Pi and Zeta Psi Celebrate Anniversaries
While business fraternity Delta Sigma Pi becomes an old man of 100 in 2007, the UAlbany Zeta Psi chapter is merely approaching middle age, celebrating 40 years this spring. Since 1967, when DSP became the first active fraternity on the newly opened uptown campus, almost 1,100 students have pledged and been accepted into the UAlbany group. Delta Sigs will have an opportunity to get together in October during Homecoming Weekend. Social work education for the prevention and treatment of alcohol use disorders.School of Social Welfare Hosts National Institute on Alcoholism and Alcohol Abuse Curriculum Workshop
Last month, the School of Social Welfare hosted the National Institute on Alcoholism and Alcohol Abuse Curriculum Workshop attended by faculty, field supervisors, doctoral students and community providers. The goal was to maximize the exposure of doctoral students to the new, empirically based curriculum materials addressing alcohol use disorders from a social work perspective. The workshop kicked off with remarks by Karen Carpenter-Palumbo, the new commissioner of the New York State Office of Alcohol and Substance Abuse Services.

Community Partnerships To Promote Healthy Living in Older Adults  
Thanks to generous funding from the U.S. Administration on Aging, the New York State Office for the Aging and the New York State Department of Health, local and statewide partners have began implementation of a three-year effort to deliver evidence-based health promotion programs to New Yorkers 60 years of age and older. The Center for Excellence in Aging Services at the School of Social Welfare assisted state partners in developing the grant and will continue work on the project, leading the evaluation and technical assistance team. UAlbany Great DaneGreat Danes Battle Heart Disease  
Great Danes are known for their impressive stature, grace and nobility. Unfortunately, Great Danes are also predisposed to a heart disease called dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM), characterized by progressive loss of heart muscle strength that typically affects middle-aged Great Danes. Symptoms commonly include breathing difficulty, poor appetite and fainting. Sridar Chittur of UAlbany’s Center for Functional Genomics is working with a veterinary cardiologist to conduct a study investigating the genetics of DCM in Great Danes. UAlbany FootballMontana, Colgate, Hofstra On Football Schedule
UAlbany’s 2007 football schedule has been announced and includes six games against Northeast Conference opposition. The non-league schedule features Montana, last year's Big Sky Conference champion; a first-ever meeting with Colgate; and a home date with Hofstra. UAlbany also plays at Fordham of the Patriot League in early September. Sacred Heart is the opponent for Homecoming & Family Weekend on Oct. 13. Junior David ParkerTrack & Field and Cross Country Alumni Group Forming
If you participated in track and field or cross country at UAlbany, come to the Hall of Fame Room in the SEFCU Arena April 20 to learn about forming an alumni constituent group. Constituent groups are organized groups of alumni who share a common bond based on a professional or academic affiliation, a sport, a club or other University program. This constituent group will help plan social events, offer Hall of Fame nominations, target capital campaigns, identify talent and help build scholarships. To learn more, contact Daniel T.
