Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver and members of the Capital Region’s Assembly delegation joined Alain Kaloyeros, president of Albany NanoTech and vice president and chief administrative officer of UAlbany’s College of Nanoscale Science and Engineering (CNSE); University President Kermit Hall; and international business leaders in July to announce a major new initiative that promises to reinvent the industry-wide model for computer-chip manufacturing.  Full story >>

Harry PotterProfessor Explains Harry Potter’s Positive Impact on Literacy
With the publication of the newest Harry Potter book, School of Education Distinguished Professor Judith Langer has been spending considerable time explaining the series’ positive impact on reading in the classroom. “For years, research in reading development has told us that school-age children do better in reading when they read on their own and come from homes where reading is part of normal activity. They also do better when they get into books, think about them, and discuss them with each other …” Full Story >>

Counseling Psychology Faculty Ranked Fourth in Nation
The School of Education’s Counseling Psychology program has been ranked the fourth best in the nation for faculty publication productivity, according to the May 2005 issue of The Counseling Psychologist. This new ranking complements the program’s 13th-place standing in the 2006 U.S. News & World Report reviews of national programs in counseling and personnel services. Full Story >>

SSW Professor McCallion Receives Prestigious Grant
Professor Philip McCallion, MSW '81, Ph.D. '93, and partners at the New York State Office for the Aging were awarded a $1 million grant from the Administration on Aging and the New York State Department of Health. The project goal is to enable the state to integrate services for persons with Alzheimer's disease and other dementias living in rural areas and ethnically diverse small cities into the state's long-term care systems change initiatives.

Blanca RamosSSW International Partnership in Peru Expands
Members of the School of Social Welfare faculty recently traveled to Peru to teach a course at the Universidad Toribio de Mogrevejo del Peru to Peruvian students interested in pursuing doctorates in social welfare. Faculty included Assistant Professor Blanca Ramos, MSW '91, Ph.D. '97; Dean Katharine Briar-Lawson; and Assistant Dean Mary McCarthy, MSW '82. The trip was part of a recent effort to develop collaborative research initiatives with Peru.

MBA Program Relocates
UAlbany’s Weekend MBA program is relocating -- packing its superb curriculum, unparalleled professors, rising executives and AACSB accreditation into a moving van headed for Clifton Park. The new executive quarters will be located on Maxwell Road, adjacent to the Chamber of Southern Saratoga County, the program’s partner in graduate business education. Students will have 24-hour access to the executive education center, which provides new classroom space, separate e-mail stations, wireless networking, projection equipment and a conference room.

UAlbany Researcher Studies Follow-up Care of Newborns Screened for Genetic Disorders
Associate Professor of Health Policy and Management Timothy Hoff has received a $68,000 contract from the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio through the National Newborn Screening and Genetics Resource Center and the Health Resources and Services Administration to study long-term follow-up care of newborns who receive abnormal screens for certain disorders. Colin DischGreat Danes Open Against Hofstra
UAlbany’s football season kicks off Saturday, Sept. 10, at 6 p.m. when the Great Danes host Hofstra. This is the first of four home games during the 2005 season. For ticket information and a complete schedule, visit www.albany.edu/sports.

Athletic Hall of Fame Inductions To Be Held
The 2005 Athletic Hall of Fame Dinner & Induction will be held Friday, Oct. 7, at 6 p.m. The 2005 induction class includes Dr. Richard Hall, Joe Rajczak '81, Dan Gmelin '98, Rafaela Nikas '98 and Joe Savino '98. For more information on this event, contact Don Ostrom at (518) 437-4416.

Golfers at the 2004 Great Danes outing.Golfers – Mark Your Calendars!

Test Prep CoursesTest Prep Courses Offered
The UAlbany Alumni Association now offers GMAT, GRE and LSAT test prep courses to help alumni and students prepare for graduate/law school admission tests. Best of all, these courses are being offered at half the price of other national courses. Classes are now forming for the fall – so register early for additional savings! Help Students Find Internships
You can help UAlbany students gain important experience by sharing internship opportunities with the Career Development Center (CDC). If your organization has a need for student interns, please send a posting to the CDC at [email protected] or fax (518) 442-5005. Please include internship title, description of duties, whether the internship is paid or credit-bearing, and contact/application information. Any questions can be directed to Sim Covington Jr. at (518) 442-7766

Reference File Alert
The Career Development Center will discard reference files that have not had any activity (no new letters of reference added and no requests to mail out file) in the past seven years, unless they hear from you by Sept. 14. If you want the CDC to maintain your file, contact the center at [email protected] or (518) 442-7768. The maintenance fee is $30 minus any current balance in your file. Note that transcripts always will be available via the Registrar’s Office.
