TO:           University at Albany Student Community

FROM:     J. Frank Wiley
                  Chief, University Police Department

DATE:      February 4, 2003

There have been three off-campus occurrences of physical assault on University at Albany men and women students reported to police in the City of Albany since January 25, 2003. While these assaults appear to be unrelated, they all occurred in the Western Avenue corridor between Ontario and Quail, and in the area of Central and Quail, during the very early morning hours.

As part of the University Police Departments on-going crime prevention effort, I ask students who are out at night, whether off-campus or on, to adhere to the following safety precautions:

 Travel in groups

 Be aware of your surroundings

 Avoid isolated areas

 Walk in well lighted areas

If possible, keep a cell phone handy in case of emergencies

It is critical you use good judgment and common sense concerning your safety. Should you be victimized, please call 911 as soon as possible. The non-emergency number for the Albany City Police Department is 438-4000, Guilderland Police Department is 356-1501, and the University Police Department is 442-3131. The University Police Department has a Victim Assistance Liaison who stands ready to help any injured party access appropriate support resources to aid in the recovery process. The Victim Assistance Liaison can be reached at 442-3130.

Thank you.
