RE: Personal Safety Alert

On Saturday, October 22, 2005 at 1:55 a.m. on the 500 block of Washington Avenue, one male and one female unlawfully entered the residence of three University at Albany students. Once inside, one subject displayed a handgun and took property from five persons who were in the residence at this time. No one was hurt in this incident. Albany City Police are investigating this crime.

You should also be aware that Albany City Police made an arrest in connection with two armed robberies of college students last week. Albany City Police continue to work closely with UPD to investigate recent incidents and both units frequently patrol the areas around Alumni Quad and the Draper Complex.

I also remind you that there will be an open forum to address recent incidents that have occurred in the area around Alumni Quad and the Draper Complex. It will be held on Thursday, October 27 at 8:00 p.m. in the Alumni Quad Dining Hall (between Alden and Waterbury). Albany Police and University Police will be represented, as well as Tom Gebhardt and Candace Merbler, the Co-Chairs of the Advisory Committee on Campus Security. If you frequent that downtown area, I encourage you to attend.

Please - be mindful of your personal safety. In addition to the usual safety measures, I remind you to:

  • Make sure all doors and windows are locked

  • Don't open your door to anyone you don't know

  • Have a porch light on at night

  • Don't walk alone at night if at all possible

Thank you.
