With the beginning of the new academic year, I am taking this time to re-emphasize the ongoing commitment and dedication to the principle of nondiscrimination and prevention of harassment at the University at Albany and the Research Foundation on the basis of race, sex, age, color, religion, national origin, marital status, sexual orientation, disability, veteran status or citizenship. As interim president, my reaffirmation of our principles on these issues continues a tradition adhered to by past presidents. The University at Albany and the Research Foundation are nationally recognized academic and research centers. At this time of transition, it is even more important that I convey this message to you as an assurance that both the University and the Foundation are unwavering in its dedication to this institutional reality.
It is University and Foundation policy to act affirmatively to ensure nondiscrimination for its faculty, staff, students and administrators that enable them to conduct their business successfully. Explicit in this assurance is the commitment to an environment in which all persons can come together in an atmosphere free from all forms of harassment, exploitation, discrimination or intimidation. The University and Foundation take seriously their responsibility to prevent discrimination and/or harassment, if possible, correct it when it occurs and to take appropriate action as necessary. There is zero-tolerance for behaviors that violate this policy.
The University at Albany and the Research Foundation recognize the critical importance and value of inclusion and recognition of diversity needed for working successfully in the 21st century. Although the programmatic responsibility for implementing the nondiscrimination commitments established by the University and Research Foundation is delegated in accordance with the line organization of the campus, the ultimate responsibility is mine. I call upon all administrators, faculty, administrators, staff and students to join me in meeting this responsibility by incorporating University and Research Foundation policies on this subject in day-to-day decisions and activities. Through our mutual efforts and resolve, we are prepared to ensure the University at Albany and the Research Foundation's academic leadership and excellence.
