THE STUDY

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the use of video and interactive multimedia technologies as pedagogical instruments to enhance the use of films in the foreign language classroom. The intermediate level of language study is important in firmly establishing language skills and attitudes. For this reason, students' reactions to their respective technology as well as their performance on vocabulary and grammar tests are important data to the project.

The subjects of this experiment were twenty students from an all-girls private high school in upstate New York, the majority of whom had completed three years of high school French. They were selected at random and divided into two equal groups. All the students in the experiment responded to a pre-session questionnaire (see Appendix A) and took a vocabulary and grammar pre-test (see Appendix B). The students in the control group each watched an English sub-titled video of the French film, Le Retour de Martin Guerre . They were asked to pay attention to the language in the film and try to learn as many of the new vocabulary words from the list that they were given (see Appendices C & D). The students in the experimental group individually worked on a multimedia program for Le Retour de Martin Guerre . They were provided with the same list of vocabulary and instructions as the control group (see Appendices E& F). In addition, they were shown how to navigate through the activities in the computer program itself. No time limit was given to the students in either group. All the students retook the grammar and vocabulary test (see Appendix B) after either watching the video or using the multimedia program. They also completed a post-session questionnaire on their respective technology (see Appendices G & H). Results on the pre and post-tests were analyzed. The students' responses on the post-session questionnaires were also reviewed and compared. Several students who were part of the control group volunteered to use the multimedia program. They did not retake the post-tests, but they did complete a questionnaire (see Appendix I) on their opinions of both media.
