Master of Arts (MA) Degree in Spanish

(30 credits minimum)

 

There are two possible tracks or concentrations

1. Hispanic Literature

  • At least 3 courses (9 credits) in the following areas:
  • Modern Spanish Literature
  • Spanish American Literature
  • One course (3 credits) in each of the following areas:
    • Literary Theory
    • Hispanic Cultural Studies
    • Spanish Linguistics
  • Spanish 509
  • Spanish 601
  • Electives as advised (maximum 9 credits of coursework in English)
  • MA Exam

 

2 . Spanish Linguistics

  • At least 3 courses (9 credits) in Spanish Linguistics
  • One course (3 credits) in three of the following areas:
    • Modern Spanish Literature
    • Spanish American Literature
    • Literary Theory
    • Hispanic Cultural Studies
  • Spanish 509
  • Spanish 611
  • Electives as advised (maximum 9 credits of coursework in English)
  • MA Exam

MA Exams

Students who wish to take the MA exam, offered every semester in October and April, must inform the Director of Graduate Studies of their interest no later than September 15 for the fall exam and March 15 for the spring exam. Possible major fields include Latin American Literature, Spanish Literature, Cultural Studies, and Spanish Linguistics. Possible minor fields include the aforementioned as well as General Linguistics, Applied Linguistics, and Literary Theory. The MA exam consists of a six hour written exam on the area of the student’s major field and a four hour written exam on either one other area (for students whose major field is either Literature or Cultural Studies) or two other areas (for students whose major field is Spanish Linguistics).

Combined BA-MA Program

Qualified undergraduates may apply for admission to the MA program and, if accepted, simultaneously work toward completion of the requirements for both undergraduate and graduate degrees, saving a year of study. Students should consult with the their academic advisor. See Combined Baccalaureate-Master's Degree Programs for details.

Students can apply for admission to the BA/MA program either on paper or electronically.  Applications are available from the Graduate Admissions office in  UAB 121, (518) 442-3980 or online at: www.albany.edu/graduate/apply.php. If applying on a paper application, write in “BAMA” and the language of choice as your program of study.

 If applying online, choose either the Spanish MA as your program of study.  Admissions Counselors will automatically place the application in the BA/MA track when they check your status.
