Bio

Timothy Sergay, Assistant Professor, is a scholar and translator of Russian literature with about twenty years’ experience translating Russian historical, journalistic, and literary texts. He is currently completing an NEA-supported translation of a recent “memoiristic novel” by Aleksandr Chudakov (1938-2005), A Gloom Is Cast Upon the Ancient Steps. (Chapters of his translations of both this novel and Maksim Kantor’s A Drawing Textbook are freely available online at Words Without Borders wordswithoutborders.org. He is also continuing to compile and edit his Translator’s Russian-English Dictionary of Contemporary Media Language. His scholarly interests include twentieth-century Russian poetry, especially Pasternak and Blok, Silver Age culture in general, Russian religious philosophy, and the Russian “guitar poets” of the 1960s to the present day. He has contributed entries on Russian language, science and technology to the Routledge Encyclopedia of Contemporary Russian Culture (2007) and also published articles in both English and Russian on Russian poetry, translation theory and criticism, and the theory and practice of verse translation.
