Defects:

There is a large ½ x ¼" loss in the lower right quadrant that has taken the paint and ground leaving the white canvas visible. The entire surrounding area is unstable. Cupping of the paint film is fairly severe in the upper right quadrant. There are two losses in the upper left quadrant. The paint is extremely brittle and requires general consolidation. Paint loss also occurred at the lower border edge and overpaint has been applied. The lower right corner is detached from plaster support.

Recommendations for Treatment

• Remove the grime layer with a mild chelating agent rinsed with distilled water
• Consolidate around areas of loss and paint deformation in the paint film
• Apply low molecular weight general consolidation from the surface
• Go over entire surface with a warm tacking iron to relax cupping and confirm adhesion
• Re-attach separations at the edges and corners using an appropriate adhesive.
• Fill areas of loss
• Inpaint as needed
• Apply protective surface coating
