Style guides provide answers to questions of presentation (style), syntax and sometimes-even grammar. The Chicago Manual of Style is particularly useful though large and expensive, there are many other shorter, cheaper resources. If you are writing a lot of essays or research papers, a style guide is extremely helpful. This link provides the answers to irregular questions.

Chicago Manual of Style Q & A

Fowler’s A Dictionary of Modern English Usage (1926) is an alphabetical listing of points of grammar, syntax, style, pronunciation, and punctuation. The depth, style, and humour of the work have made it a classic of English philology. A copy can be found in reference sections of the library.

The Oxford English Dictionary (OED) make sure that you have access to this, or another good dictionary, which will provide invaluable assistance!
