George Harvan set out to record life around him as work in the region's mines slacked off. In country auctions in central and southern Pennsylvania he found a subject that offered play to his creative talents. He gained notable recognition as well when the Saturday Evening Post published one of his photographs in November 1959 in its series, "The Face of America."
