COLLOQUIUM ON JEWISH EDUCATION

The Colloquium is a special forum for educators, researchers, scholars, administrators and practitioners from the Capital Region, upstate New York, western Massachusetts, and southern Vermont to learn something new and explore how to further advance Jewish educational efforts in the Northeast.

The Colloquium is sponsored by the Center for Jewish Studies and supported by the Kesher Center for Jewish Education, the Board of Jewish Education of the United Jewish Federation of Northeastern New York, and the School of Education at UAlbany.

The venue for the Fall, 2002 semester is the Standish Board Room, 3rd floor of the Science Library, on UAlbany's uptown campus. Sessions will include a free kosher buffet lunch.

The next sessions for the Colloquium on Jewish Education are:

Thursday, October 10, 12:00 - 2:00 PM:
Dr. Joel Berkowitz will present on the topic of "Bringing Yiddish into the Curriculum: Issues, Challenges, Suggestions". Dr. Berkowitz is an Assistant Professor at The University at Albany's Judaic Studies Department, who specializes in Yiddish language and literature. He offers insight and innovative ideas on using Yiddish and English translations of Yiddish sources, in formal and informal educational settings. Dr. Berkowitz will focus on the relationship between Yiddish and Hebrew in Jewish life, especially in Jewish education. While it has become common in many circles to believe that Yiddish and Hebrew are incompatible and at odds with each other--that one must choose between the two--this has not been the case for most of the past millennium. He will therefore argue that the teaching of Yiddish language and culture, alongside rather than instead of Hebrew, are vital to a well-rounded Jewish education. Dr. Berkowitz is a member of the Judaic Studies Department at UAlbany

Thursday, December 5, 12:00 - 2:00 PM:
Ruth PellhamMs. Ruth Pelham will give a presentation on "Creating an Ethical Community Through Music." Ruth Pelham is a nationally renowned singer, songwriter, and educator who performs for people of all ages in schools, libraries, clubs, festivals, parks, conferences, and other community venues.

She is the founder and director of Music Mobile, an educational arts organization which presents innovative programs that foster a love of music and creative arts, promote cooperation, build self esteem, and revitalize neighborhoods and communities. Her songs embody the spirit of community - a theme that weaves its way through her repertoire of songs for people of all ages. Her upbeat performances are described as "charismatic", "mesmerizing", and "inspiring", and she has been acclaimed by folksinger Pete Seeger as "one of America's greatest songwriters." Many musicians including Holly Near, Ronnie Gilbert, and Pete Seeger have recorded her songs.
