Center for Jewish Studies

Message from the Director

Welcome to the Center for Jewish Studies! Once again, the upcoming year promises to be filled with exciting events and programs. We are fortunate to have been selected for a second year of funding from the prestigious Legacy Heritage Jewish Studies Project grant from the Association for Jewish Studies. Over the coming year, we will be hosting a series of events on the theme "Jews Along the Hudson," which features an exciting array of events about Jewish life and history from the Adirondacks to Manhattan. Our series will begin with a lecture “Summer Joins the Past” by Los Angeles-based photographer Albert J. Winn in September and will conclude with a talk by poet Esther Schor on Emma Lazarus at the Museum of Jewish Heritage in Manhattan in April. See our Events Calendar for details.

The academic program in Judaic Studies was founded forty years ago by a small group of committed faculty, students, and community members. The Center was inaugurated in 2002 to support scholarly research, pedagogy, and extracurricular and public programs. The current budget situation faced by the University has meant that all academic units in the University have faced cutbacks and Jewish Studies is no exception. In order to maintain a vibrant presence for Jewish Studies at UAlbany for the next forty years, we need your help. Please be generous and make a gift to the Center.

With best wishes for a happy and peaceful new year,

Barry Trachtenberg, PhD

Associate Professor of History
Interim Director, Center for Jewish Studies
