Setting up PCs as DHCP clients (non-WinXP)

Step 1:

  • Right-click the 'Network Neighborhood' icon on the Windows desktop
  • Select 'Properties' from the drop-down menu

Step 2:

  • From the window which appears, select the TCP/IP Protocol that is bound to the Ethernet card
  • Click the 'Properties' button

Step 3:

  • Make note of the IP address and Subnet Mask.
  • On the 'IP Address' tab, check the box which says 'Obtain IP address automatically'

Step 4:

  • On the ‘Gateway’ tab, make note of any gateway information.
  • Highlight the ‘Installed Gateway’ and remove it.
  • Click 'OK' to save and exit.
  • Windows will now require a restart

CONFIGURE FOR WINDOWS XP

  1. Click Start and Control Panel in Windows.

  2. Click Network and Internet Connections.

  4. Right-click on the Ethernet icon and select Properties.

  5. Highlight Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) by clicking it once and select Properties.

  6. Make note of the IP address and subnet information.
  7. Select the options Obtain an IP address automatically and Obtain DNS server address automatically then click OK.

  8. Click on Advanced.
  9. Make note of the Default gateway, then highlight it and click remove.
  10. Click OK to exit the Local Area Connection Properties window. Your new settings should take effect immediately.
