X-Win32
Introduction
X–Win32 is X terminal software that allows PC users to connect their Microsoft Windows systems to
X Window System applications residing on Unix-based servers. While X-Win32 is a client/server system, the
X Window System has important differences from other client/server software such as mail or HTTP.
X applications (such as xterm and mailtool) are clients, while an X display (such as X-Win32) is a server.
Steps for Accessing unix with X-win32
From the public user rooms, to use X-Win sessions to access itsunix.albany.edu:
1) Start the X-Win32 Server - by clicking the appropriate icon in the ‘Xwin32 5.1’ folder in the Programs menu. An application icon will appear on the Windows 98 taskbar.
2) Telnet to itsunix.albany.edu - and log in as usual.*
3) Call/spawn new X-windows through your telnet session as needed - by appending the "&" character to your calls. For example, emacs & will open emacs in an X client window.
Note: Once you close/exit all of your X client windows, the X-Win32 server application will automatically close. If you need to spawn new X client windows, you will need to repeat Step 1.
Downloading
X-win32 is not available at this time for use on non-University or personal machines.
*When logging onto a telnet session with F-Secure you will see the following error:

You can click on the OK button and continue accessing the machine. You can ignore the message, as it relates to a security issue.
