The University’s main telephone number (518) 442-3300 is front-ended by an automated directory system. External callers reaching this system, and those that dial ‘0’ from on-campus, can simply say the name of the person or department they wish to be connected to.  The system will prompt the caller with its interpretation of their request and complete the call.  This system does very well in recognizing names and works best when callers avoid speakerphones and are in a quiet environment. It has greatly reduced the number of calls our operators have to handle on a daily basis. 

The automated directory system is available around-the-clock and allows increased flexibility in the hours that the main number is staffed by an operator.  Beginning December 8th, 2008 the hours of operation of the switchboard will be from 8:30 AM to Noon and 1:00 PM to 5:00 PM Monday through Friday.  Depending upon availability there may be times when only the automated directory system will be available.

Callers are encouraged to use the automated directory system whenever possible and only request a switchboard operator when they are unsure of who or what department they need to call.
