ALARM Group ALERT - click for a description of ALARM, The Computing Alert System Alert Number: 042606-01 Alert Date: 04/26/06 Alert Title: Microsoft re-releases security bulletin MS06-015 Update-to: 041106-01 "Microsoft releases security bulletin for April", 041706-01 "Performance Issues on some systems following install of Microsoft Security Update" OS/Platform/Application: Systems that exhibit performance/usability issues following the installation of Security bulletin MS06-015. Category: UPDATE Severity: MEDIUM Attention: Windows System Administrators, Desktop Support Personnel, Windows system users. |
Summary: On April 25 2006 Microsoft re-released security bulletin MS06-015 in response to widely-reported usability/performance problems on certain systems following the installation of the original MS06-015 (a critical update included in the vendor's April security bulletin). Problems include the inability to access/save documents, inability to expand folders, inability to enter an address into the Internet Explorer address bar, etc. These problems are caused by the interaction of a new binary file (VERCLSID.EXE) associated with the update that is handled incorrectly by Software from Hewlett-Packard (Share-to-web software), Sunbelt (Kerio Personal Firewall) and NVIDIA.
Recommended Actions: The re-release of MS06-015 is a "targeted" release, intended only for systems exhibiting problems due to the original MS06-015 bulletin and also systems that have not yet applied this patch. Systems currently running MS06-015 as part of the April security bulletin that are NOT exhibiting any usability/performance issues do NOT need to have this new version of this patch installed. Systems that are exhibiting problems AND running Automatic Updates will have the new version of MS06-015 downloaded and installed automatically. Systems NOT running automatic updates should be directed to download this patch (and all others in the April security bulletin) ASAP. Windows System Administrators, Support Personnel, or end-users who experience functionality/performance problems such as those described above following the installation of MS06-015 should read the knowledge base article (link provided below) as part of their troubleshooting procedures and manually install the updated bulletin if Automatic Updates are not enabled for their system(s). The article includes instructions on how to modify the system registry to address the problems with Hewlett-Packard and NVIDIA software.
ITS Actions: No specific actions are being taken to address this issue at the present time.
