What You Need In order to use WebMail you need to be a faculty, a staff or a student at the University of Albany.
What You Get WebMail is the web interface that allows a user reliable access to the University at Albany UNIX email service. It is compatible with all mainstream web browsers and offers support for attachments, address books and folders.
Key features of WebMail:
• Offers instant access to e-mail from anywhere in the world. No configuration is required.
• Has built-in spell checking.
• Highly customizable, allows the user to change settings such as screen colors, the number of messages that appear per page, and other attributes such as indexing order.
• Supports SPAM Filtering.
• Personal Mail Aliaso For enrolled students, WebMail has an option that enables the student to set up a personal mail alias. For example, John Doe with the NetID jd12345 has the University email address jd12345@albany.edu. John can set up the personalized email address jdoe01@albany.edu for his family and friends to use. The University will continue to send mail to jd12345@albany.edu even if John selects or changes his personal email alias.o For employees, a mail alias can be requested when the request for a UNIX mail account is submitted.• Allows the forwarding of albany.edu mail to an external email account with the help of filtering rules.
o NOTE: The University uses email as its official means of communication. If you forward mail to a third party service, such as Hotmail or Gmail, the University cannot guarantee delivery.• Allows for easy tracking of mail quota each time the user logs in to WebMail. The amount of total disk space currently being used is conveniently displayed in the top left corner.
o A more detailed view of quota usage can be found by selecting “Folder Sizes”, located under the Inbox. This view shows the folder name with the total number of messages, unread messages and amount of space used per folder.• Supports the use of mail filters that allows the user to automatically move incoming mail to specified folders.
• Allows for the creation of a personal signature.
• Allows for the import and export of address books.
• Allows users to send an attachment up to 2MB, with a complete message size of 10 MB after encoding.
• Provides the ability to archive email. By choosing what messages to archive and then selecting the archive button at the bottom of the mail list, users can save messages to their local computer and reduce quota in the mail account. Different compression types such as zip or tar can be set by going to Options and making a change to the Archive Settings.
• Uses the IMAP protocol. The user has the option of leaving messages on the IMAP server to be accessed at a later time from any location. IMAP Server Instructions
