The Emacs screen consists of three parts (listed from the bottom up):

Part Name		Location		Description
echo area		Bottom line		The echo area displays feedback to the user on the editing process.
mode line		Above echo area		The mode line contains status information on the text currently loaded in the text window (the current buffer)
Text window		Above mode line		Displays the current text loaded from a file or manual entered by a user.
