ITS - DHCP Network Registration (at location of use)
In order to use your computer to access the University's network, you must first register it. Also, if you move your computer to a new building (subnet) (i.e. to another office), you will need to go through this process again.
*IMPORTANT* - Since this process may take some time, you should register your computer before your class starts.
In order to register your computer, you will need to have already activated your Unix account. This must be done in order to allow you to authenticate yourself to the network.
(You can activate your Unix account by visiting http://www.albany.edu/myualbany, and clicking the Password Set/Reset button. To activate your Unix account, you will need your PIN. Your PIN should have been mailed to you in a letter (regular mail) from the CIO. If you do not know your PIN, you can contact the ITS Helpdesk by phone at 442-3700, or in person at LC-27 to get it.)
You must also ensure that your computer's TCP/IP properties are set to obtain an IP address automatically. Contact your TCF for help with this.
Once the above conditions are met, follow these steps to register your computer:
- First, connect your computer's NIC (Network Interface Card) to the network jack using an ethernet cable.
- If it doesn't automatically open when you start your computer, open a web browser to http://netreg.albany.edu.
- You should see a message stating that your machine is not registered on the subnet (building) that it is currently connected. Read this page, and then click "Continue".
- The next page will be "Welcome to the Network Registration System". It will describe why you need to do this process, and will provide links to the University's Computing Policies. Read the page, and click "Enter".
- A window will pop up asking you to enter your NetID and Password. Here, you will enter your Unix NetID and Password.
- The next page will say "Quick Network Registration". It will describe the registration form you will see on the next page. Read this page, and click "Continue".
- The next page to appear will be the form to Register your machine: "Machine Registration - Register a New Machine".
Subnet - This should be filled in automatically for you.
Hostname - This field is optional. (To find your hostname, click here.)
Mode - Leave the default ("dynamic").
Hardware Address - Leave the default.
Affiliation - Choose your department from the pull-down menu.
- Click the "Continue" button.
- You should see a screen saying that your machine was added to the network, with a list of all machines registered to your name. You can close this, you're done!
