Defenses: Connection Standards

Windows #1 Use a Current Operating System:

What does this mean?
All devices that are connected to the University network need to be running current versions of their operating system software. A current version is one supported by the vendor with technical support and regular updates. To be considered compliant, the system should have all available service packs and patches installed.

Why is this standard necessary?
End-of-life operating systems no longer receive updates and support from their manufacturers. Consequently, any security or performance issues that emerge will be unresolved. These systems then become a liability to operate and a burden to support.

What operating systems are available?
There are many options in operating systems (Microsoft Windows, Apple OS, Sun Solaris, Linux, etc.). However, for the average user there are only two main options: Microsoft Windows, or Apple OS. The current operating systems in these categories are: Windows 2000, Windows XP, (Windows Vista will be available in January 2007), and Apple OS-X.

How can I check to see if my OS is current?
You can check the system properties of your computer (in the Control Panel for Windows), and see what version of the Operating System is running. Also, you will want to make sure you have all the service packs that are available (SP4 for Windows 2000, and SP2 for Windows XP).

Where do I get OS updates?
For Windows, you can visit Windows Update via the Internet Explorer web-browser by clicking on the "tool" menu, and selecting Windows Update. You can also set your computer for Automatic Updates via the Control Panel.

IMPORTANT!
Compromised systems that are running non-compliant versions of an operating system will be suspended and not allowed back on the University network until the operating system is updated to a current, supported version.
