Security Tools for Beginners:

Symantec Anti-Virus CE

 Experience Level I

  Anti-Virus with Real-Time Protection.

Free for Registered University at Albany Students

 Installed on University-owned computers.

 Apple OS-X Version Available.

Description of Symantec Anti-virus Corporate Edition:
Symantec (Norton) Anti-virus runs in real-time so virus infections can be detected and quarantined immediately. SAV CE protects against viruses that attempt to disable security measures. It has the ability to be updated via a server or with Live Update.

Basic Instructions for Use:
You may obtain the software for private use from the
University’s software download page and install it on your computer.

Important! If you have any other anti-virus programs already installed, you should remove them before attempting an install of Symantec AV CE.

Once installed, you may want to run a scan. To do this, open the application via the Start menu, or the yellow shield icon in your quick launch bar. Then click on "Scan" from the left side window. Select "Scan Computer," and then choose the drives you would like to scan. If you aren't sure which ones to choose, just check "My Computer" which will scan all drives. The scan will then begin and run in the background. Threats (viruses and malware) will be listed as they are found, and a summary is presented at the end of the scan.

Remember to update BEFORE scanning. To do this, just click "Live Update" after you launch the program.

More Information:

The University at Albany pays for a licence for all attending students. You may install and use the anti-virus for free as long as you are a student, including all updates. University staff have the software pre-installed on their office computers. If you do not have a copy, please contact your Tech Support person.
