Setting Up Spam Filtering In Webmail

Step 1  Introduction  
 

Before the software can start assigning a spam score to your email messages you must "opt-into" its use.  This is accomplished by enabling spam filtering via an Options Menu within UA's Webmail client.

Step 2  Create Spam Folder  
 

You will need a special folder into which possible SPAM can be stored.  Once you are in the WebMail Client create a spam folder like this:

Click on WebMail's Folders menu:

 

When the Folders screen is displayed, fill in the name "spam" in the text box under Create Folder.  Then click the Create button to actually make a folder called "spam".  It will be created as a subfolder of your INBOX folder.

 

A folder named spam will now appear in the "folders list" contained in the left column of WebMail (under the INBOX folder name).

Step 3  Enable Spam Filtering  
 

Click on the Options menu :

 

After you've clicked the Options menu item you will see another screen:

 

Now you must click on the Mail Filtering link.

Once you've done that the "Server-Side Mail Filtering" screen will be displayed.

Before you can start using the information supplied by the new software to filter your email message, you MUST enable spam filtering (sometimes called opting-in) on the screen illustrated below.

 

Please click the button labelled:             Enable SPAM filtering

                                                                                    

After doing this a new screen containing a disclaimer regarding your use of  email message filtering is displayed. You should read this disclaimer very carefully and then click the AGREE button to proceed.

Step 4  Create Filtering Rules  
 

After agreeing to the disclaimer you will be presented with a screen at which you can either add                      

1.   A new SPAM Rule

      or

2.     A new mail filtering rule


Let's select "Add SPAM Rule" first!!

The screen illustrated below is now displayed and contains the "default settings" for adding a server side SPAM rule. You can (and probably should) modify this rule before proceeding.  If you wish to adopt this rule as shown simply click the Add SPAM Rule button to activate it. (You can always delete or modify this rule at a later time).

Once you've clicked the "Add Spam Rule" button, the following screen is displayed:

You can now click the Save Changes button to finish your current ¿rules¿ session (you will then be returned to the WebMail options screen)

                                              or

You can add a new rule by clicking either the Add a New Rule or Add Spam Rule button.

Let's select Add a New Rule.

Assume you wish to filter out any incoming email that contains the word viagra in the Subject line.  Having clicked the Add a New Rule button on the previous screen you¿ll see this display:

We in fact want the "radio" button next to Header Match selected since the subject line of an email message is a "header".   Then you need to click on the " Move on to step 2 >> "  button.

You now see Step 2 of the New Rule Wizard.  Use the "pull-down" menu next to the words "The header"  to select the  Subject  field.  Choose the word "contains" from the pull-down menu to the right of the Subject field, and then  type in the word viagra in the  text box located just below the Subject.

Then click the button labelled "Move on to step 3"

Step 3 of the New Rule Wizard is displayed:

You now choose any action you wish to take with respect to the email, which contained viagra in the subject.  In this example the user has selected the radio button next to "Discard Silently" in order to simply delete "viagra subject" email upon arrival. Now click the " Move on to step 4 >> "  button.

You now see Step 4 of the New Rule Wizard -   Confirmation  !

You now should review the rule as it is described on this confirmation screen and then click the appropriate action button to  Start Over ,  Cancel ,  or  Finished . 

We'll select Finished and display the next filtering screen.

After previously selecting Finished, the Current Mail Filtering Rules display appears:

Once again you may choose many options including (1) deleting a selected rule,  (2) editing a selected rule,  (3) Add a New Rule, (4) Add a SPAM Rule, or  (5) Save Changes and return to WebMail options.  You can also change the "order" in which the rules are applied by clicking the up or down arrows displayed to the right of the rule.  You now have all the information you should need to create the rules you wish to apply to your email messages before they actually get to your INBOX.

Note: You MUST click Save Changes to activate these rules.
