Spam Filtering UAMail for Faculty/Staff

do it now

Details for Faculty/Staff

What you need

A UAmail account provided by ITS.  (However, you may be using UNIX WebMail (or Pine, POP or IMAP mail from your UNIX account) for which spam filtering is also available.  If this is the case, see the details for WebMail.)

What you get
An elimination or reduction in the number of unwanted advertising messages (spam) in your e-mail.

What happens next
Note that email that receives a spam score over 20, indicating it is most certainly spam, is automatically deleted by the University email system without your taking any further action. To further reduce spam, you need to set up spam filtering for your UAmail account.  This is done by starting up Microsoft Outlook on your computer and running the Rules Wizard.

how it works
ITS spam filtering uses a wide variety of local and network tests to identify possible spam messages arriving at the UA mail server. Each email message sent to you is run through a multitude of tests, resulting in it being given a "spam score/level." The tests performed make it harder for spammers to identify ways to craft their messages to work around our filters.

for more information

Follow the step-by-step instructions for setting up spam filtering in UAmail.
