Subject: Scheduled Shutdown of IT ServicesTo the University at Albany Community:
As part of our efforts to improve the campus IT infrastructure, a partial rehab of the main computing center machine room is underway. This project includes a major upgrade to the electrical capacity and requires a two-day shutdown in order to perform this work.
== THIS SCHEDULED SHUTDOWN OF IT SERVICES WILL OCCUR FRIDAY, DECEMBER 26, 2003 - SATURDAY, DECEMBER 27, 2003 ==
This shutdown affects all servers in the ITS Computer Room, CS-5. Listed below are the major services that will be unavailable during this period.
Once the electrical upgrade is completed, we will begin the reactivation of services. All services are projected to be up and running in production for start-of-business Monday, December 29, 2003.
We want to thank everyone for their feedback and cooperation regarding the scheduling of this shutdown. If you have any questions, please contact your Technology Support coordinator (see listing at http://www.albany.edu/its/help/technologysupportlist.html ).
Read on for specifics, and some FAQs.

Chief Information Officer
University at Albany
SERVICES AFFECTED BY THE 12/26-12/27 SHUTDOWN:
- Electronic mail (both Unix and Exchange/Outlook)
- Unix cluster services (compute, file and CSDA servers)
- Windows LAN, file-share and networked printer services
- University web servers
- University library catalog server
- WebCT
- All IAS PeopleSoft productions services, including MyUAlbany
- All Funds Reporting and IFR Billing and Receivables
- All IBM mainframe applications including DARS, Parking Management, CICS-dependent access to SUNY Central applications
- Office of Advancement and UAF Financials server (Danes)
- RS6000 services (Student Accounts)
Also:
- Uniprint printing will be unavailable and the ITS public user rooms will be closed during the outage.
WHAT ABOUT UA WEB PAGES?
UA web pages will not be accessible during the shutdown. During the shutdown, the main campus web page (www.albany.edu) will be redirected to a static web page containing information about the shutdown.WHAT ABOUT INCOMING e-MAIL?
Mail addressed to user@uamail.albany.edu or user@albany.edu (and its variants e.g. cnsunix.albany.edu, csc.albany.edu) will not be received during the shutdown. Most ISPs' mail servers will attempt several deliveries before returning mail to the sender. The worst-case scenario is that mail will be returned to the sender; it will not be lost. If you anticipate receiving important e-mail during this period, we advise notifying the sender in advance.WHAT IT SERVICES WILL BE AVAILABLE?
- Desktop PCs will be able to log-on to the campus network; you can work off your PC's local hard drive.
- Access to the Internet and to servers not affected by the shutdown (not housed in CS-5) will be available.
LAST, BUT NOT LEAST.
A separate upgrade to campus main network router (that connects us all to the Internet) will be scheduled in early January. This outage will be scheduled for a weekend and of a much shorter duration. Further details to follow.
