Summary: Several post-installation issues have been discovered by system administrators following the release of October's Monthly Cumulative Security Bulletin. The issues are linked to Security Bulletin MS05-051 "Vulnerabilities in MSDTC and COM+ Could Allow Remote Code Execution (902400)" and are manifested by the failure of a variety of services (including the Firewall Service) to start properly. Microsoft has released a new advisory and knowledge base article (both numbered 909444) to describe the issues and provide workarounds.
Recommended Actions: Windows system managers and support personnel are encouraged to read the advisory and knowledge base article if they encounter any post-MS05-051 installation issues.
ITS Actions: ITS Systems Management and Operations Staff will apply all recommended workarounds to the appropriate ITS servers as part of the next scheduled system update.
