ITS: Email Services

Configuring Eudora 5.1 to Access the Mail Server (IMAP or POP)

Troubleshooting

  1. From the Tools menu, select Options.

  2. Under "Getting Started", enter the information requested as follows:

    Real name: <your full name>

    Return Address: <your e-mail address>

    Mail Server: imap.albany.edu

Login Name: <insert your userid here>

SMTP Server (Outgoing): smtp.albany.edu (for on-campus machines ONLY! *)

    * If you are using Eudora from an off-campus machine, you must use the name of the outgoing server provided by your Internet Service Provider (ISP). Contact your ISP for details.

  3. Click "Checking Mail" on the left and select "Never" under "Secure Sockets When Receiving." If you wish to check for mail automatically at regular intervals, enter an amount 15 minutes or greater where it says "Check for mail every xx minutes".

  4. Click "Incoming Mail" on the left and select either IMAP or POP as your server configuration. With the IMAP method, you access your mail directly from the mail server, and your messages and folders will appear the same whether accessed from the web interface or from separate mail software. If you choose POP, messages will be downloaded onto your personal computer and removed from the server unless you specify otherwise. If messages are removed from the server, you will not be able to access them via the web.

See below for different options you can select based on your choice.

    IMAP

    POP
Message Deletion Under "When I delete a message", you can either have it marked as deleted or moved into the Trash folder. (The recommended choice for Eudora is to mark it as deleted.) Choose "Leave mail on server" if you want copies of your downloaded messages left on the mail server.

  5. Click OK to finalize all your settings.

You have now successfully configured Eudora for use in checking mail on the mail server.

If you have chosen to use a POP connection, your mail client will be unable to tell whether your messages were read or not, so all messages downloaded will appear as unread.

Troubleshooting

If you use Eudora 5.1 and suddenly get an error such as:

SSL negotiation failed

Check step 3 above and make sure your Eudora configuration matches the instructions. If not, change it and then try checking your mail again.
