Access Control List Explanation and Procedures

What is an access control list?
ACLs control connections based on source address, destination address, protocol, or port. The ACL does not allow any traffic through unless it is explicitly allowed by a permit statement in the ACL.

There are two parts to an ACL. The first is the access list itself where the permit/deny determination is laid out, the second the an access-group that is applied to an interface that brings the ACL into play.

Lastly, ACLs are very literal. Once a match is made on the ACL, no other expressions are considered, the packet is either permitted or denied.

Procedures:
Requests would be submitted via the Access Control List Request Form. The form would have to be signed by an authorized signatory and either hand-delivered or faxed to the TSC.

Only machines containing information deemed as critical, sensitive or confidential should be requested.

You must contact the Telecommunications Service Center to arrange for this service. Please contact the TSC via email telecom@uamail.albany.edu or call them at 437-3800.
