How do I setup wireless printing on a Mac?


Requirements

  1. This client supports Mac OS X 10.4 and 10.5 on both Intel and Power PC.
  2. You will need to log in as an administrator to complete the installation on your Mac OS X client machine.
  3. For each client machine, use the Mac OS X Print Center or Printer Setup Utility applications to configure printers for your desired locations.
  4. If your computer is using any Firewall software, you must have these ports allowed:
    • Port 515
    • Port 28203

Downloading the software

This software is for the private use of Faculty, Staff and Students at the University at Albany. By clicking on the software you agree to abide by all copyright laws that may apply to this software and you agree that installing the software on a personally-owned computer does not obligate the University to provide technical support for the computer.

 

  1. Download the Mac OS X client installation package.
  2. Click on a location where you want to send your (wireless) printouts. (Note - If you want to print to more than one location, you will need to install an additional print driver for the specified location.
    • In Firefox, choose Save File and click OK. Firefox will save a file to your default download location (usually the Desktop).
    • In Internet Explorer, click Save. You will be prompted to choose a location to save in. Choose Desktop and click Save.

Installing the software

If you have a personal firewall installed on your computer, you may see several block message pop ups during the download process. Select the option which will allow or accept the download to proceed.

  1. Find the file that you have downloaded and double-click the file to create a new disk image in Finder. This disk contains the Popup 6.1 installer, <Popup.pkg>.
  2. Double-click the installer to run it. You may be requested to authenticate yourself as an administrator. Press Continue two times.
  3. Select a destination disk. You will only be able to select the startup disk. Click Continue to proceed.
  4. Click Install (or Upgrade). The installer automatically installs Popup 6.1 and required support files. You may be requested to authenticate yourself as an administrator. Press Close to complete installation.

Configuring Printers


For the items in bold, find the specified information in the Printer Settings table below.

Mac OS X 10.4 (Tiger) 

  1. Open Printer Setup Utility in </Applications/Utilities/>.
  2. On Mac OS X 10.4, click the Add button in the toolbar, then hold down the Option key on the keyboard and click the More Printers... button.
  3. From the topmost popup button, select Advanced.
  4. From the Device popup button, select Pharos Print Server.
  5. In the Device Name field, enter the name of the new Print Queue. Consult the Printer Settings table below to determine the Print Queue for the printer.
    • For example, if you want to use the B/W printer in the University Library, your Print Queue will be mainliblaser.
  6. In the Device URI field, enter the Device URI. Consult the Printer Settings table below to determine the Server and Print Queue for the printer. The format is popup://ford.univ.albany.edu/Print Queue
    • For example, if you want to use the B/W printer in the University Library, your Device URI will be popup://ford.univ.albany.edu/UnivLibBW. If you want to use the B/W printer in the University Library, your Device URI will be popup://ford.univ.albany.edu/SciLibBW.
  7. From the Printer Model popup button, select Generic as the type of printer associated with the Popup queue.
  8. Click Add. The new Popup queue will now show up in the list of printers.
  9. To print to the new queue, select it from the printer menu in the print dialog of any application

Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard)

  1. Open System Preferences and click on the Print & Fax icon.
  2. Click the + button.
  3. Hold down the Control key on the keyboard and click anywhere on the toolbar. From the popup menu that appears, select Customize Toolbar....
  4. Drag the Advanced icon to the toolbar and close the customization dialog.
  5. Click on the Advanced button in the toolbar.
  6. From the Type popup button, select Pharos Print Server.
  7. In the URL field, enter the Device URI. Consult the Printer Settings table below to determine the Server and Print Queue for the printer. The format is popup://ford/Print Queue
    • For example, if you want to use the B/W printer in the University Library, your Device URI will be popup://ford.univ.albany.edu/UnivLibBW. If you want to use the B/W printer in the University Library, your Device URI will be popup://ford.univ.albany.edu/SciLibBW.
  8. In the Name field, enter the name of the new Print Queue.
    • For example, if you want to use the B/W printer in the University Library, your Print Queue will be UnivLibBW. 
  9. From the Print Using popup button, select Generic PostScript Printer as the type of printer associated with the Popup queue.
  10. Click Add. The new Popup queue will now show up in the list of printers.
  11. To print to the new queue, select it from the printer menu in the print dialog of any application.

Removing Popup

To remove Popup 6.1 from a client machine, run the Pharos Uninstaller:

  1. Launch the Uninstaller application in /Library/Application Support/Pharos/Utilities.
  2. Select Pharos Popup and any other Pharos components that you would like to uninstall, then click Continue.
  3. A list of the selected items will be shown. Click Continue.
  4. Type in an administrator user name and password when required to do so. The selected components will be removed from the client machine.
  5. Click Done and log out of the client machine.
