Anti-Spyware (Spyware Scanner) Icon, this icon is used to indicate that the tool is designed to scan your computer for, and remove, spyware.

Anti-Virus (Virus Scanner) Icon, this icon is used to indicate that the tool is designed to scan your computer for, and remove, computer viruses and other virus-like and virus-related malware.

Apple OSX Version Available Icon, this icon indicates that a version of this software is designed to work with compatible versions of the Apple OS-X operating system.

Experience Level Icon, varies between 1-3 icons. The more icons there are, the more experience a user should have before using the tools described.
1 icon = Average user level, 2 = Advanced user, 3 = Expert.

Free for Institutional Use Icon, this icon is used when a tool's licence allows institutional use. This means that university faculty and staff can install and use the program on their work computers. Generally, if a tool is free for institutions, it is also free for personal use, which is indicated by the "Free for Personal Use Icon".

Free for Personal Use Icon, this indicates that the tool is free to download and use on your personal computer, however unless you see a "Free for Institutional Use" icon, you cannot use it on a university, corporate, or other public machine without first purchasing a licence.

Free for UAlbany Students Icon, this icon indicates that the University at Albany has purchased a licence that can cover all students that are currently matriculated.
Symantec Anti-Virus is an example of a licence software available for free to students. However, this licence does not apply to faculty, staff, previous students, or non-students.

Generic Application Icon, this is used as a placeholder for the application icon when there isn't one. (normally this is because the tool is MS-DOS, or UNIX, command line based and does not have a graphic interface(GUI) nor an icon).

GNU General Public Licence Icon, this icon is used to indicate that a tool falls under the GNU GPL as defined by the Free Software Foundation. All persons may use and distribute such a tool so long as they do not claim it as their own. If distributed, you must include the source code as well as the program binary.

Linux Version Available Icon, this icon is used to indicate when a version of the software is designed for use with various Linux operating systems. Actual compatibility and usability may vary.

Malware Deletion Utility Icon, indicates that the tool can be used to remove or delete, malware that is commonly difficult to remove or delete. These tools need to be used carefully as they can permanently delete important and non-harmful files if used improperly.

Malware Detection Utility Icon, is used to denote that a particular program is good at, or useful for, detecting malware. However, this does not imply that it can remove the malware, or determine if items found are actually harmful. These types of utilities should be used with caution. These utilities are not spyware or virus scanners.

Microsoft Windows XP Only Icon, this indicates that the tool is only available on licensed copies of the Microsoft Windows XP operating system. Such tools and utilities may not be available for older versions of windows, or other operating systems. (All other tools assumed to work for Windows 98se and newer, unless otherwise specified) Note that compatibility with Windows Vista may vary.

Pre-Installed on Faculty / Staff Computers Icon, this icon is used to indicate that the tool is licensed for use, and installed by default, on all university-owned computers. University owned computers are generally all computers in offices or labs under university control, and computers used by university employees. This DOES NOT indicate that the tool is licensed or automatically installed on student machines, or on the personal machines of university employees. Non-university owned machines (Student and Faculty/Staff personal machines) will need a separate licence and media to install such software on their own. Real-Time Protection Icon, this icon indicated that the program can monitor changes to your computer in real-time. This allows for detection of malware as soon as it becomes apparent (launches, installs, etc.)
