Information Retrieval

CRJ 692 Data Utilization in Criminal Justice (4)
This course will cover the essentials of quantitative data file construction, documentation, transfer, manipulation, storage, nd management. Topics include building both rectangular and hierarchical data files using various types of programs and formats. This includes matching and merging data files. Special attention will be paid to issues surrounding the management of longitudinal data files including security, time ordering of events for analysis, data storage, weighting of stratified data, and post-stratification weighting for attrition. The logic, mechanics, and implications of various mechanisms for imputing missing data will be covered. Prerequisites: permission of department.

CSI 445 Topics in Computer Science: Data Mining (3)

The contents of this course will vary from semester to semester. Each offering will cover an advanced senior-level topic in Computer Science. Prerequisite(s): A CSI 333 (or A CSI 205 & 310) or permission of instructor. May be repeated for credit when content varies. http://www.cs.albany.edu/~davidson/courses/FallCSI661-DataMining/DataMiningWebPage.htm

CSI 539 Advanced Data Structures (3)

Data structures for efficient retrieval in the context of problems relating to aggregation, reporting, quantifier evaluation, and range queries in both dynamic and static settings. K-d trees, k-fold trees, balanced trees, and other advanced topics. Prerequisite: CSI 503.

    CSI 550 Information Retrieval (3)

This course will discuss theory and practice of searching and retrieval of text and bibliographic information. Topics covered include automated indexing, statistical and linguistic models, text classification, Boolean and probabilistic approaches to indexing, query formulation and output ranking, information routing and filtering, topic detection and tracking, as well as measures of retrieval effectiveness, including relevance, utility, miss/false-alarm. Techniques for enhancing retrieval effectiveness including relevance feedback, query reformulation, thesauri, concept extraction, and automated summarization. Experimental retrieval approaches from Text Retrieval Conferences (TREC); modern Internet search engines (Google, AltaVista, etc.). Prerequisites: CSI 210, CSI 310; or IST 301/601, IST 602; or IST 433/633; or permission of instructor. http://aquarius.ils.albany.edu/CSI550/

GOG 385 Introduction to Remote Sensing of Environment (4)

Introduction to the concepts and interdisciplinary applications of remote sensing. The basic principles of theory and practice are presented for earth resource management. Photographic and nonphotographic sensors are examined. Visual and digital image analysis techniques are introduced. Students will interpret color infrared, multispectral, radar, and other sensor imagery for a variety of purposes. Prerequisite(s): junior or senior class standing, or permission of instructor. http://www.albany.edu/gp/academics/undergrad/courses/gog/gog385.htm

GOG 485 Advanced Remote Sensing of Environment (3)

A variety of remote sensing applications and techniques are discussed with reference to geography, planning, and related disciplines. Natural resource classification systems, mapping strategies, and data collection steps are analyzed through empirical exercises. Fundamental concepts of digital image analysis including theory, processing, enhancement, and information extraction are given particular attention. Prerequisite(s): A GOG 385. http://www.albany.edu/faculty/fmh06/agog485/

GOG 584/PLN 551 Graduate Introduction to Remote Sensing of Environment (2)

Designed to prepare students without a background in remote sensing with an understanding of fundamentals in the field. A research project is required.
