All international students who are not U.S. Citizens or Permanent Residents are automatically enrolled in the International Health Insurance when they register for one credit hour or more. Spouses and/or children of enrolled students are also required to carry health insurance within thirty one days after arrival to the US. The student must enroll their dependents and pay the insurance company for the cost of the dependents’ insurance.
It is recommended that you do not purchase International Health Insurance before you arrive in Albany, as it may not meet the University's Mandatory Health Insurance requirements. You will be required to enroll in our University's group health insurance if you do not have other health insurance that meets the University's health insurance requirements.
NOTE: Graduate students with assistantships receive health insurance as a benefit and are not automatically enrolled in the mandatory international health insurance. However, they must still purchase MEDEX insurance and health insurance for their dependents, if any.
The health insurance does not cover physical examinations, routine eye or dental care. You can avoid additional, large health expenses here by completing physical examinations and necessary eye or dental care before you travel to the U.S. If you wear glasses or contact lenses, you might consider bringing a second pair and a copy of your prescription.
Insurance Cost & Coverage
The cost for International Medical Health Insurance for the 2009-2010 is as follows:
- $414.50 Fall Term (August 15, 2009 – January 14, 2010)
- $580.50 Spring/Summer 2010 Term (January 15, 2010-August 14, 2009)
- $414.50 Spring Term (January 15, 2010 – June 14, 2010)
Note: This amount is for individual students or exchange students here for one term only.
Individual monthly charges are as follows:
- $83.00 per month for students
- $178.00 per month for spouses
- $96.00 per month per child
MEDEX (Medical & Security Evacuation & Repatriation) is required for all international students and is included with the full mandatory health insurance at no extra cost. GA’s, TA’s and RF employees who opt to carry the state insurance (NYSHP, Empire Blue and/or ?) are required to carry the MEDEX insurance at a cost of $6.00 per month or $30 Fall Term, $42 for the Spring/Summer 2010 Term.
The International Medical Health Insurance covers a wide variety of medical treatments, from hospital visits, prescriptions and surgery to mental health treatment. Enrollment application forms for your family members can be picked up at the Office of International Education (Science Library G-40). The student is required to complete the application and mail it to the address on the form with payment.
