The Institute for Research on Women was pleased to be able to run a small grant open competition during Fall 1991 to encourage faculty and graduate students to conduct new joint research on gender and health issues.
Since finds were limited, we were only able to award seed money for one project during this round. Sonia Miner, this year's recipient, will work with Professor Glenna Spitze on a study that examines the balance of formal versus informal uses of social support among the elderly. Focusing on race and gender differences in service usage and mental health outcomes, the research will make use of the National Health Interview Survey's 1984 Supplemental on Aging. IROW News looks formal to reporting the results of this project, as well as those of the 1990-91 award recipients, in a future issue.
