Representatives from the National Endowment for the Humanities and the American Council of Learned Societies presented an immensely successful funding workshop on March 12 at the invitation of IROW. Attended by forty faculty members and administrators from the University at Albany and other Capital District institutions, the workshop by Dr. Janet Greenberg of the ACLS and Dr. Edith Couturier of the NEH focused primarily on how to write a successful proposal for each agency.
The presentations also emphasized major changes in funding trends at a national level, including the recent elimination of grants for travel to conferences and research collections. Dr. Greenburg stressed, however, the ACLS research grants are now open to area studies scholars who, in the past, could apply for ACLS/SSRC funds only through the Social Science Research Council.
The workshop also brought to IROW's attention a fascinating article on sex bias in reference letters. Look for more information on this critical issue in the next issue of IROW News.
