Judith Barlow established the Lillian Barlow Initiatives for Women scholarship for a student in any field. She was also awarded the Collins Medal for outstanding contributions to the University.

Iris Berger (History, Africana Studies, and Women's Studies) received the Distinguished Africanist Award from the New York State African Studies Association 1997. She was president of the African Studies Association in 1996-1997.

Eloise A. Brière (French Studies), was elected Vice President of Le Conseil International d'Etudes Francophones, and will become president in June 1998.

The Gloria R. DeSole Fund for Initiatives for Women was established for enhancement of educational and career opportunities for women at the University at Albany.

Francine Frank (Women's Studies, Linguistics and Cognitive Science, Latin American and Caribbean Studies) became Professor Emerita when she retired in 1997. She was the invited keynote speaker at the 30th anniversary celebration of the Linguistics Program at SUNY Oswego, in 1997; serves as co-chair, Committee on the Status of Women in Linguistics, Linguistic Society of America; and was Conference Chair, Annual Conference of the National Women's Studies Association, 1996.

June Hahner (History, Latin American and Caribbean Studies, Women's Studies) is the incoming co-president of the Coordination Council for Women in History.

Karyn Loscocco (Sociology) received a grant from the National Science Foundation to study women and men entrepreneurs.

Linda Nicholson (Educational Administration and Policy Studies, Women's Studies) and Kathleen A. Turek (Center for Excellence in Teaching and Learning, Women's Studies) received the 1997 Bread and Roses to honor those who have made extraordinary contributions on behalf of gender equity at the University.

Linda Pershing (Women's Studies) received tenure and promotion to Associate Professor in 1997. Linda's book, The Ribbon around the Pentagon: Peace by Piecemakers (Univ. of Tennessee, 1996) was awarded the Elli Kongas-Maranda Prize for the best publication in folklore and women's studies by the American Folklore Society.

Marjorie Pryse (English, Women's Studies) is the National Women's Studies Association (NWSA) Membership Committee Chair and was NWSA President in 1995-1996.

Judith R. Saidel (Center for Women in Government) and Norma M. Riccucci (Public Administration and Policy) are co-principal investigators of a two-year pilot study on women leaders and policy change funded by the Ford Foundation.

Glenna Spitze (Sociology, Women's Studies) was appointed to a three-year term as Chair of the Sociology Department, the first woman to hold that position. She also (with co-author John Logan) received the 1997 William J. Goode Distinguished Book Award of the Family Section of the American Sociological Association for their book Family Ties: Enduring Relations between Parents and Their Grown Children (Temple, 1996).

The Kathleen A. Turek Initiatives for Women award was established by Kathy Turek for an undergraduate woman student who is majoring in computer science and has taken a course in Women's Studies.

Lillian S. Williams (Women's Studies) was awarded tenure and promoted to Associate Professor in 1996. In addition, Lillian is a member of the Governor's State Historical Records Advisory Board and a consultant for the New York State Museum "Harlem in the 1920's" permanent exhibit. She also received a grant from the New York State African American Research Foundation for a research project, "Community-Based Youth Serving Agencies in New York."
