The Institute for Research on Women (IROW) and the Center for Latin America and the Caribbean (CELAC) at the University at Albany have received grants from the Ford Foundation and the UUP-NYS Joint Labor Management Committee on Affirmative Action to encourage State University of New York (SUNY) faculty to incorporate material on race and gender into their teaching and research formulations. The project will include two major events: (1) a one and a half day public conference on "Integrating Class, Race, and Gender into the Curriculum and Research" to be held June 7 and he morning of June 8, 1991; and (2) a three day Faculty Development Seminar for SUNY-affiliated faculty and professionals on "Integrating Puerto Rican Women into the Curriculum and Research" to be held June 8-10, 1991 at the University at Albany campus.
The keynote speakers at the public conference will be Margaret Andersen from the University of Delaware, Patricia Hill Collins from the University of Cincinnati, Angela Ginorio of the university of Washington, Elizabeth Kamarck Minnich from Union Institute in Cincinnati, Linda Nicholson from the University at Albany/SUNY, and Frances Mascia-Lees from Simon's Rock College. There will be a conference preregistration fee of $5.00 for University at Albany faculty and of $10.00 for all others.
The Faculty Development Seminar is available only to SUNY faculty and professionals selected in an open application competition to receive one of the $350 grants. The Seminar will be conducted by scholars from various disciplines who are specialists on Puerto Rican women, and by curriculum specialists. Comparative approaches with other Latino women will also be included in the discussions. Selected participants from the SUNY system will be awarded a stipend of $350 to cover their travel, meals, purchase of books and materials, and compensation for their participation. In addition, the project will cover University housing costs for participants. Participants will be divided among three disciplinary tracks: social sciences, humanities, and behavioral and natural sciences.
To be eligible for application to the Faculty Development Seminar, you must hold an appointment at one of the units of the SUNY system and teach courses in any of the following disciplines or fields of study: Anthropology Biology, Economics, English, Psychology, Spanish Sociology, Women's Studies, area studies or ethnic/racial studies.
