INSTITUTE MISSION
T
he Institute's mission is to stimulate interest in gerontological research, education, and practice in the School of Social Welfare and other departments of the university. It is the centerpiece of the University at Albany's multi-faceted approach to responding to the needs of the diverse and rapidly growing population of older persons in the Capital region, New York State, and the nation.
The Institute promotes principles of engagement and social responsibility by joining with community and state agencies to improve outcomes for the most vulnerable older persons in society. It also stimulates interest in the capacity, potential, and needs of older persons at local, state, and national levels, and works to develop additional sources of support for the university's efforts on behalf of current and future generations of older persons.
The Institute mission includes:
- Conducting applied gerontological research in partnership with New York State and community organizations to address issues raised by the aging of the American population.
- Fostering collaborative gerontological research within the School of Social Welfare and among other university departments.
- Promoting educational, practice, research, and training opportunities for students and faculty in the School of Social Welfare and across campus.
- Increasing the capacity of the University to conduct high quality gerontological research, education and practice innovations and to form partnerships to respond to diverse community needs.
- Disseminating information and technical assistance to local, state, national, and international constituencies resulting from the applied research agenda of the Institute.
- Raising community awareness of the needs and strengths of older persons from diverse cultures.
- Building community partnerships that foster innovative new practices and policies through demonstration projects.
