National Coming Out Day

Wednesday, October 11, 2006, 9:00am - 4:00pm
Campus Center Small Fountain

National Coming Out Day commemorates October 11, 1987, when 500,000 people marched on Washington for gay and lesbian equality. National Coming Out Day events are aimed at raising awareness of the LGBT community among the general populace in an effort to give a familiar face to the LGBT rights movement.

This Coming Out Day, UAlbany's Pride Alliance is holding a rally around the small fountain all day with guest speakers, open mic, and a bake sale. We will also be chalking and handing out flyers explaining the day and offering information on how to be an Ally.

In the afternoon and evening, Pride Alliance and Student Association are co-sponsoring a guest speaker - long time bisexual activist and author Robyn Ochs. She will be holding two workshops:

  • "Homophobia: You Can Do Something About It!" from 2:00-3:30pm in Campus Center Room 375

  • "About the B & T in LGBT" from 5:00-7:00pm in Campus Center Room 364

Ms. Ochs will also host an evening presentation at 8:30 in Campus Center Room 364 entitled "Same-sex Marriage: a View From the Front Lines" where she will speak about gay marriage and her experience as being one of the first to be wed in Massachussettes when she married her long time partner Peg Preble in 2004.
