5K Run/Walk Against Sexual Assault This Saturday!

The New York State Coalition Against Sexual Assault (NYSCASA) will host the first annual 5K Run/Walk “RUN AGAINST SEXUAL ASSAULT” on Saturday, September 29, 2007 at The University at Albany campus.

The Run/Walk will start at The University at Albany at 10:00 a.m. Registration fee is waived for UAlbany students; minimum $15 fundraising required. Students should register on-site from 8:00 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. at the Dutch Quad Field. Bring your SUNY Card! T–Shirts will be awarded to the first 300 registrants. Teams are welcomed. Prizes will be awarded to the top male and female runners in each age group and to the team that raises the most money.

Proceeds from the race will be used to fund statewide outreach, advocacy, and education.

NYSCASA is committed to ending all forms of sexual violence and exploitation by advocating for the effective response to all people affected by sexual assault. We do this by providing technical support and assistance to Rape Crisis Centers, working legislatively to improve public policy and confronting societal denial of the impact of sexual violence through statewide outreach and education. NYSCASA works to raise awareness of both the incidence of sexual violence and the impact of sexual violence in our communities. The FBI and the Journal of Trauma Stress estimate that one in three women, one in four girls, one in six boys and one in eleven men will be the victims of sexual assault at least once in their lives. In New York State, 13,500 sexual offenses were reported to law enforcement in 2006. In Rape in America: A Report to the Nation, National Victim Center, rape is called “the most underreported violent crime in America.” In a national survey of American women, only 16% of the rapes (approximately one in every six) had ever been reported to the police. At the time they were raped: 83% were under the age of twenty-five.

Come out and RUN AGAINST SEXUAL ASSAULT.
