ACT Student Initiative Awards Nomination Guidelines

Criteria
Nominations are open to any student or any student group that identified a need on the campus or in the community, and worked to provide a service or solution to address that need. The project should be identified and initiated by the student(s) without any outside influence from faculty or administrators. Once a need is identified, the student(s) will often have to work closely with faculty and campus staff to address the need. However, the spirit of the award recognizes events, services, or programs that would not otherwise exist on the campus or in the community if the student(s) had not taken it upon themselves to act. The project should have occurred during the 2008-2009 school year.

Number
There will be a maximum of four winning entries, one from each of the four campus regions.

Submissions
Nominations may be submitted from any source. Submissions should be no longer in length than two typewritten (double spaced) pages. Supporting materials – photographs, newspaper articles, etc. may also be submitted, but cannot be returned. Please send 5 copies of each submission to distribute to the judges.

Nominations should be sent to:

Albany, New York 12246
Attn: Jennifer LoTurco

Deadline
The deadline for submission is October 2, 2009.

Judging
Council members from each of the four campus regions will serve as judges. Submissions will be grouped by region. Each judge will rank submissions within a group from highest to lowest. Judges will not vote for submissions from his or her region. (For example, a judge from Region I can group and rank the submissions from Regions II, III, and IV, but not for Region I.) All votes will be tallied and submissions will be awarded points based on their rankings. The submission with the highest point value in each region will be the winner.

Award Presentation
Recipients and their guests should plan to attend the Awards Luncheon at the ACT Fall Conference on October 24, 2009 at the Otesaga Resort in Cooperstown, NY. A special presentation during the conference will be held in their honor where they will receive a plaque recognizing their achievement, as well as a $250 donation to the cause or charity of their choice.
