"On December 10, 1996, five years to the day after it was formally launched, the Campaign for Albany -- the largest and most successful capital campaign in the history of New York public higher education and the first such undertaking for the University at Albany -- concluded.

"Alumni, parents, faculty, friends, corporations, and foundations contributed more than $55.3 million to the campaign, surpassing the overall goal by $300,000 -- and bringing the drive to an end three years ahead of schedule.

"Alumnae Susan Van Horn Shipherd '64, Bernice Mosbey Peebles '39, Patricia Salkin '85, and Roanne Kulakoff '81 earmarked their campaign gifts for Initiatives for Women, a program established in 1993 to assist University women in attaining their academic and career goals. By late 1996, Initiatives for Women had distributed scholarships, research funding, and other awards to 51 individuals and groups."
