ALBANY--The State University at Albany is launching a $1 million fund-raising effort to support scholarships and programs geared for the
advancement of women.

The new Initiatives for Women will be part of the $55 million Campaign for Albany already underway to raise private funds for the public university.

Candace Groudine, associate vice president for development, said the new project was created by a group of SUNYA faculty who wanted to
create opportunities for women and contribute to the university's capital campaign.

Contributions are being sought from individuals, corporations and the business community.

Initiatives for Women will fund scholarships, low-interest loans and excellence awards for female students and endowed chairs for visiting
lecturers. It will also provide internships, training programs and career planning and advisement to help women ascend the career ladder.

Other new initiatives will include graduate fellowships for women employed by the state Legislature and state agencies, research on women's
issues, and special programs for minority women and women with disabilities.

The drive will begin with a reception today at the University Art Museum. SUNYA President H. Patrick Swygert, Vice President for Academic
Affairs Karen Hitchcock and Gloria DeSole, senior adviser to the president for affirmative action, will serve as hosts.
