Albany-The University at Albany will announce a $1 million
fund-raising effort today to support the success of women and women's concerns
at
every level of the university.
To be called "Initiatives for Women," the program
is designed to enable university women to realize their academic and career
potential. Details
will be announced at a reception at the University Art Museum on the main campus,
1400 Washington Ave.
Candace Groudine, university associate vice president for
development, said that Initiatives for Women, which is part of the $55 million
Campaign
for Albany, will support scholarships and low-interest loans, excellence awards
for students, internships and training programs to enable women
to move into management, career planning and advisement to help women in ascending
the "career ladder," endowed chairs for visiting
lectureships, graduate fellowships for women employed by the state Legislature
and state agencies, research on women and women's issues,
academic and career advancement for women of color and educational and professional
initiatives for physically challenged women and others in
particular need.
The initiative grew out of the interest of a group of university
women who said they wanted to create an opportunity for individuals and
organizations to contribute to the advancement and education of women at the
university, and at the same time contribute to the university's
capital campaign efforts, Groudine said. Support will be sought from individuals,
corporations and the local business community. The university's
initial goal is to raise at least $1 million for the various programs and activities
that will be part of the project.
