A major fundraising effort will support the success of women and women's concerns of every level at the University at Albany.
Initiatives for Women, launched in May, is designed to enable
University women to realize their academic and career potential. The program
will
raise $1 million to support scholarships and low-interest loans; excellence
awards for students; internships and training programs to assist
women into moving into management; career planning and advisement to aid them
in ascending the career ladder; endowed chairs for visiting
lectureships; graduate fellowships for women employed in New York's legislature
and state agencies; research on women and women's issues;
academic and career advancement for women of color; and educational and professional
initiatives for physically challenged women and for others
in particular need.
According to University President H. Patrick Swygert, Initiatives
for Women grew out of the interest of a group of Albany women who said they
wanted to create an opportunity for individuals and organizations to enhance
the advancement and education of women at the University, and, at
the same time, contribute to Campaign for Albany fundraising efforts. "The
University at Albany has provided equal educational opportunity for
women since its founding nearly 150 years ago. Initiatives for Women continues
the University's proud tradition of responsiveness to the special
interests and needs of women," adds the president.
Donors may support Initiatives for Women in a variety of
ways, including direct gifts of cash or securities; gifts-in-kind, such as equipment
and
supplies; or planned gifts, including trusts and bequests. Pledges payable over
a convenient period of years may also be made.
In announcing the program May 12, President Swygert applauded
the dedication and interest of University women in establishing the fund. "Their
concern for the advancement of women," he maintained, "reflects the
University at Albany's longstanding commitment to equality and opportunity
for all individuals."
