Initiatives for Women, a major fundraising program at the University at Albany that enhances the educational and career opportunities for women, will host their Third Annual Awards Dinner on Tuesday, November 12, beginningat 5:30 p.m. at the Wolfert’s Roost Country Club on Van Rensselaer Blvd. in Albany. A highlight of the evening will be "A Conversation With Karen R. Hitchcock," newly inaugurated president of the University. Tickets for this fundraiser are $60.

Hitchcock is the first female president in the 152-year history of the University. Helen Desfosses, a professor in the University’s Rockefeller College and a popular talk show host on WAMC radio, will present a lively interview with Dr. Hitchcock in which she will discuss the professional and personal journey which led her to the University’s presidency. This unique format will provide an interesting way for the audience to get to know Dr. Hitchcock and learn about her vision for the future as we approach the next century.

Initiatives for Women is part of the $55 million Campaign for Albany, and supports endowed scholarships, fellowships, excellence awards for students, internships and training programs, career planning and advisement, research on women and women's issues, academic and career advancement for women of color, and educational and professional initiatives for physically challenged women and others in particular need.

Tables at the fundraising event for corporations and groups are also available. The price of the ticket, which includes the tax deductible contribution, will help provide funds for the next round of awards. For more informationor for an invitation, please call (518) 442-5415.

Award winners this year include an undergraduate student who was asked to represent Puerto Rico in track and field in the international games, an MFA student working on an exhibit which focuses on women’s bodies and pregnancy, a senior clerk in need of financial support as she earns her undergraduate degree, and a Ph.D. student in Counseling Psychology who is studying women with eating disorders and how their social expectations are related to body image (see 1996 recipients for complete list of this year's winners).

"In times of tight resources, an award from Initiatives for Womencan make a dream a reality for the woman researcher, the student who is a single parent, the artist who needs support to present her thesis exhibit," said Gloria DeSole, Senior Advisor to the President for Affirmative Action and Employment Planning and Chair of the Initiatives for Women Steering Committee. "The opportunity to make a significant difference in the lives of women whose dreams need support is a privilege. And the chance to hear Karen Hitchcock tell more about herself at this important moment in her career will be a delight as well."
