Living-Learning Communities

The University at Albany is pleased to offer Living-Learning Communities (L-LCs) to our students. L-LCs provide students the opportunity to meet like-minded students, live in the same residence hall, and take some classes with students who share similar interests or intended academic majors. Students who reside in a L-LC enjoy all the same amenities as other residents, yet benefit from a unique living experience.

What are the benefits of UAlbany Living and Learning Communities?
  • You live with people who share your interests.
  • You will quickly meet friends, classmates, upper class students and professors who will all help you acclimate to the University at Albany and develop skills for success both inside the classroom and within the broader campus community.
  • You will have built in study groups since all the students on the hall will be in some of the same classes with you.
  • You have a ready-made support network of students, Resident Assistants, administrators, and faculty who you can turn to for help or advice.
  • What are the features of UAlbany Living and Learning Communities?
  • Students live in the same residence hall with other students assigned to the same LL-C for one academic year.
  • Students take some classes with students in the L-LC in both the fall and the spring.
  • Each L-LC has a lead faculty member and student support to help the students organize programs that are of interest to the L-LC members and further the exploration of the topic or major.
  • Study sessions for the exams or projects in the L-LC classes take place right in the residence hall.
  • How do I apply / join?
  • Students apply for L-LCs when they pay their housing deposit and apply for housing.
  • When registering for housing, students must note their interest in the appropriate L-LC(s). Students can designate both a first choice and second choice option.
  • If you are requesting a roommate, your roommate MUST also apply for the same L-LC.
  • L-LCs will be filled on a first come, first serve basis. Applicants will be notified by July 1st if they have been accepted into the L-LC. Once the L-LC is filled, students will be placed on a waiting list and notified if space becomes available. This allows incoming freshmen to work with their advisors in their summer planning conferences to plan their fall schedule of classes to support the L-LC.
  • Questions about the various L-LCs can be directed to the Office of Student Engagement at studentegagement@albany.edu. Questions about housing and housing/roommate assignments can be directed to the Department of Residential Life at reslife@albany.edu
