September Programs

Sept 19 Salsa has no frontiers

Empire commons community center 8 pm- 9:30 pm
Our aim is to teach interested UA members the development of the Salsa genre. The use of facts and cultural approaches will be used to define Salsa as a musical genre. Join the discussion lead by CHARGE Assistant Luis Paredes (University Apartments) and the UAlbany Salsa Dance Club. A Salsa dance instructional will follow after discussion.

Thursday, September 20, 2007 is recognized as “Jena 6 day of action”. As thousands descend on Jena to press for justice, the CHARGE office as well as many other UA student groups will take action in our UA community to support the Jena 6. Please join us as we discuss the history of the case, as well as inform UA members how they can lean more and make a difference.

Raffle drawing at the open house. Buy your raffle tickets at your quad office or the CHARGE office. Proceeds benefit CHARGE’s monthly community service. This month we are partnering with the Capital District African American Coalition on AIDS to participate in the AIDS Walk 2007

Raffle prices- $1 for 1 ticket, $3 for 5 tickets and $5 arms length (yours). Prizes $15 I-tune card, $15 Barnes & Noble gift certificate, 2 movie tickets and a CHARGE filled mug


SEPT 27 HOW TO MAKE SUSHI –CAMPUS CENTER IN FRONT OF OLO SUSHI 8 PM- 10 PM

Students will be able to make sushi and learn about Japanese culture by attending this program.

SEPT 27-OCT 11 CLEAN CANS AND BOTTLES DRIVE

Support CHARGE as we fundraise for the Capital District AIDSWalk 2007. The walk may be over, but the cause isn’t. Bring your empty cleaned out soda/water bottles and cans to your respective Quad can drive designated area. Each recycling bin will have glitter writing on it stating "AIDS CAN DRIVE". If you can not find or do not feel like brining your bottles or cans to these bins, please feel free to leave it in your room to make a collection, however, we ask that you donate these items to your quad office on Friday September 28, Friday October 5, and Thursday October 11 before 5pm.

This can drive will start September 27th and end on October 11th.

SEPT 30 11th ANNUAL CAPITAL DISTRICT AIDSWalk 2007 WASHINGTON PARK LAKEHOUSE 2 PM

Please join CHARGE as we walk with the Capital District African American Coalition on AIDS (CDAACA)to participate in the 11TH annual AIDSWalk 2007. AIDSWalk 2007 raises urgently needed funds for the fight against AIDS. The money raised through this event will support the efforts of Capital Region AIDS organizations that provide AIDS prevention, medical care and support services.

Participants are provided with accounts of local Under Ground Railroad activism, walking where freedom seekers walked and visiting locations where abolitionist activists lived, worked, or conducted activities.

"She's on a athletic team? Well, then she is probably gay" This stereotype and more have haunted women in athletics for years. Join Dutch Quad's C.H.A.R.G.E Assistant Candice for a cup of coffee, tea and so forth as she discusses how these stereotypes affect not only straight female athletes, but gay female athletes as well.

Oct 31 Be Bold, Be Brave, Be Red: Stop the Violence and Ending the Silence About Violence Against Women of Color.

7 pm Campus Center Room 364- Organized by the New York State Coalition Against Domestic Violence

Be Bold, Be Brave, Be Red is part of a National Campaign to end the silence about violence against women of color. Many acts of violence against women of color (especially African/African American women) often goes unnoticed, not discussed and easily dismissed by all systems. When women of color (especially African/African American women) do report and disclose acts of violence, they are subjected to more interrogation and scrutiny.

Come show your support on Wednesday evening.

It should be a really interesting discussion about media, music and popular culture and how that contributes to perceptions of women of color.

NOV 13 Boys Don’t Cry

Join Dutch Quad's Resident Assistant Allie Wisker and Dutch Quad’s C.H.A.R.G.E Assistant Candice Mann during Transrememberance Week, as they present the movie Boy's Don't Cry, a depiction of the life of Brendan Teena, a young transgendered person murdered for being transgendered. A discussion will be held afterwards of the movie and how it impacts transgendered people.

The 2007 Africana Women's Forum celebrates the collective progress of the African Diasporic Woman by tapping into her reality and encouraging participants to take a closer look at their own interactions with one another. The main theme for this year is to engage discussion around compassion, the need for greater social justice as well as collective healing. Let your voice be heard on Monday December 3rd 2007 at 7:30 pm as C.H.A.R.G.E Assistant Candice from Dutch Quad hosts DEF POETRY SLAM Featuring Def Poet GEMINEYE. ALL ARE WELCOME, artists, students and faculty alike to one of the biggest slams this year. Contact Candice at lefthanded2005@yahoo.com for further information.

Gemineye is one of the hottest poets to ever hit Russel Simmon's Def Poetry on HBO. Grand Slam Champion in New Jersey in 2002 and 2003 are just some of his many accomplishments in the Poetry Circuit. Gemineye is an Alum of the University at Albany and will be laying down his slams on Monday December 3rd DefPoetry Slam.

April 11 A blast from the past : Invisible Children Benefit Dance

The 2008 Blast from the Past: Invisible Children Fundraiser is a program designed to raise awareness about the injustice that is happening in Northern Uganda today. This benefit dance is our way as students here at the University at Albany, to make a difference in another person’s life. This is an important time in Uganda’s history, and we want to make a difference for children of the future.

We hope you will join with us and other participating student groups in our efforts to invest in peace with Invisible Children.

Join Dutch CA Rania as we listen to music from the globe and learn fun facts associated with it.
