Welcome
The Honors College is a community of developing scholars that includes some of the best teaching professors and some of the brightest and most serious students at UAlbany. The students are earlier in their development as scholars, and the faculty are further along, but all are refining and enhancing their abilities to create knowledge.
Are you a student applying to UAlbany, one of our current first-year students, or a UAlbany professor interested in a challenging and intense classroom experience, a collaborative research experience, and a residence experience focused on fun and hard work? Come join us!

Exploring Albany
In my Honors Class "Getting to Know Albany," Professor Roberts constantly urges us to go explore the Hudson River waterfront. This was not a necessity for the class, just something to do if we had free time. On a pleasant sunny day, I decided to take his advice and went on an excursion downtown with a couple of classmates. As we walked along the riverfront we were amazed at the beauty that existed beyond the campus. Following the bike path it was not long before we reached the Livingston Bridge where construction workers were making repairs. Seeing that the bridge had a separate pedestrian walkway, I was quick to get the attention of one of the workers and asked him if they could give us a tour from atop the bridge.

Surprisingly, they said yes. With this, we all got a view of the Albany waterfront from a new perspective, something that was extremely captivating.

Honors Students Help the Equinox Center
This past summer, rising first-year honors student Arianna Wedin suggested that incoming honors students all bring some "travel size" personal-care items (e.g., soap, shampoo, razor, shaving cream, deodorant) to campus with them, that we make individual packages with one of each type of item, and that we take these to a local shelter for distribution as needed. It was a terrific idea that involved most of the incoming honors students. In October, we delivered about 200 individual packages to the Equinox Center, a youth shelter in Albany.

Honors Students on the HeartWalk
Kellie Helin, a rising second-year honors student, organized a large contingent of honors students to participate in this year's Heart Walk at the Colonie Center. Students helped to raise funds for the American Heart Association, to expand their research efforts to prevent and treat heart disease. "It was great to see so many students involved and we all had a good time together," Kellie stated.
Special August Orientation for Incoming Honors Students
The Honors College Class of 2013 arrived on campus two days early this year for a special orientation program. Incoming students were divided into groups that were led by a Person of Extraordinary Talent (POET) from the Honors Class of 2011.
A scavenger hunt the first day introduced students to the campus, and activities that afternoon focused on helping students get to know each other. The second day featured bus tours of Albany and tours of the Academic Podium.
Many thanks go to the POETs for giving generously of their time, to the Department of Residential Life for facilitating this new program, and to Chartwells and University Auxillary Services for proving meals to honors students and their families.
