Organizing the honors a cappella group
All honors students interested in A Cappella singing are encouraged to attend this organizational meeting. We had an a cappella group two years ago, but it fizzled a bit last year. This year we are aiming to have many honors students involved. Some experience with singing is probably needed, but not a lot of experience. Come and give it a try. PHS Summer Trip to Australia; Medical mission trip to Uganda
Katie Reed, a 2009 graduate from The Honors College, will describe the Presidential Honors Society trip that will take place this summer and answer questions about other travel opportunities available through the Presidential Honors Society. More information on the Presidential Honors Society is available on their website. In addition, Kellie Helin, a rising second-year honors student, will describe the process of organizing a medical mission trip to Bumwalukani, Uganda. Specific dates for the trip have not been determined, but the trip is anticipated to take place either this summer, next year’s winter intercession, or next summer (depending on when works best for most prospective participants). The trip will be within the Foundation for the International Medical Relief of Children (FIMRC). Funding and participation will be discussed. Finding Primary Sources and Old Newspaper Articles, 18th – 21st century (1 hour)
Identifying and finding primary sources is not easy. As the original record or firsthand account, primary sources can be found in many forms. Designation as a primary source may depend on context, focus and perspective, and time of study. This session also covers locating newspaper articles and how to access these documents using University Libraries tools.

Honors Tour of the NYS Capitol
Honors students will go on a tour of the NYS Capitol Building. We will meet at the Collins Circle bus stop a couple minutes before 2:00 and take the bus down to the Capitol. We'll admire the outside a bit and then wander down to the underground level, look at some art, and start our tour. Those who would like to drive or go early can meet us at 3:00 by the tour office (there are signs once you get underground). The Capitol Building is one of the most ornate capitols in the US, and well worth a visit.

Heartwalk!
Students from the Honors College are once again participating as a team in the annual Heart Walk, and this year we are hoping to get even more people to take part! The event will take place on Saturday, October 17th at 9:30 a.m., and students (both honors and non-honors) are encouraged to sign up early by visiting the Heart Walk website. On the day of the event, we will meet at 9:00 in the Steinmetz lobby area for a quick breakfast, and then carpool over as a team to The Crossings of Colonie (roughly a 5-10 minute drive from campus). The event will involve a walk around the loop of the area (as many times as you would like), and this will be followed by a complimentary lunch from Subway, live entertainment from Wylder Rocks, and several recognition ceremonies and contests. Honors students Amanda Boyd and Melissa Trapani present our ninth open mic night. Honors students play or sing music, read poetry or prose, dance, and display their other talents. The evening is informal, the audience is supportive and kind, and the atmosphere is florescent. A sign-up sheet for performers will be displayed on one of the windows in Professor Haugaard’s Steinmetz Office two weeks before the event, but you are welcome to come by and participate even if you do not sign up in advance. All honors students and guests are welcome to come by and support their friends as they express themselves under our florescent lights.

Honors Lecture: Professor Snyder
Science is Tamed Spirituality: Being a farmer, I discuss all deep issues in terms of animals. Scientists employ ideas that are like domesticated animals, of recognized breed, and crafted to reliably perform certain specialized tasks. The larger population of spiritual people has a tendency to want to let the farm animals out of the barn to mix with wild species. Examples will be given using ideas from evolution, cosmology, and quantum theory.

New York State Writer's Institute: Mario Cuomo and Doris Kearns Goodwin
In 1984, Governor Mario Cuomo signed into law the legislation creating the Writers Institute. Since then the Institute has hosted over 1,000 visiting writer appearances, screened over 400 films, and presented dozens of writing workshops, symposia, and special events, making it one of the premier literary arts organizations in the country. Mario Cuomo and historian Doris Kearns Goodwin, along with other guests, will join us for an evening of reminiscence and celebration. We will also screen a film highlighting memorable guests and events from our 25 year history.

Honors Lecture: Professor Mandle
Distributive Justice: Distributive justice is an attempt to answer the question "who should get what?" The most popular theories say that it involves some kind of equality. But it seems as though insisting on an equal distribution of goods will inevitably place limits on individual freedom. We can see in the work of the philosopher John Rawls, an understanding of distributive justice that attempts to reconcile the values of freedom and equality.
