Honors Courses

Students who enter The Honors College as incoming first-year students are expected to take six honors courses during their first two years. Students typically take three honors courses each of their first two years. There are some exceptions, however. For example, students planning to study abroad for a semester during their sophomore year may take four honors courses during their first year and two honors courses during their second year.

Students who enter The Honors College at the end of their first or second semester at UAlbany are expected to take four honors courses during their second year.

Exceptions to these expectations can be made when doing so advances a student's education plan. For example, it is possible for an honors student to take one honors course during his or her third year. Exceptions, however, must be applied for and require a meeting with Professor Haugaard to discuss the need for the exception.

Maximum Numbers of Honors Courses

In order to maintain the small size of all honors courses, a limited number of seats are available in honors courses each academic year. So that all honors students can take their required number of honors courses and have a variety of courses from which to choose, there are limits on the number of honors courses that students can take each semester and during their first two years at UAlbany.

Students who enter The Honors College as incoming first-year students are limited to taking six honors courses while at UAlbany and are limited to two honors courses in any semester.

Students who enter The Honors College at the end of their first or second semester at UAlbany are limited to taking four honors courses while at UAlbany and are limited to two honors courses in any semester.

Exceptions to these limits can be made by Professor Haugaard, if doing so will advance a student’s education plan. For example, if a seventh honors course fits well into a student’s major or minor, an exception to the limit of six courses may be made. Similarly, it may be important for a student to be able to take three honors courses during a particular semester. Students seeking an exception to the limit on honors courses should consult with Professor Haugaard.
